The style we are learning is Ichi Ryu.

Practicing outside of class and participating enough during class will have a huge impact on getting to your next belt. If you don’t practice enough, you simply will not progress to your next belt. Karate is only for certain people so if you aren’t passionate about the sport or if you don’t enjoy doing it, you’re going to have a harder time progressing as well.

Getting your black belt is not easy. To get it in the shortest amount of time possible, you would have to practice for hours daily. It can take years to become a black belt and our tests even for belts of a lower rank are very in-depth. With enough dedication, you will eventually be able to get your black belt.

Our dojo is a relatively laid-back environment. In some cases, classes have been changed due to certain events, but usually run every once per week for 45 minutes

It is up to the students whether or not they participate in tournaments. Our sensei is willing to sign us up for tournaments, but does not require participating in them as part of the class.

Yes. Anyone is welcome to come down and watch a class to see if you are interested in becoming a student.

You will restart at a white belt simply because each style is different and has different material.

There is not a set monthly/weekly fee to join. If you decided you wanted to join class, you would have to purchase a karate gi for around $40.00-$50.00. You also should purchase the class shirt for when it is too hot to wear our gi tops. Those cost $20.00. Also, when you progress to your next belt, you will have to purchase your belt for $15.00.

At McKeown’s Dojo it is understood that as kids/students get older they will have other priorities. With that being said, if you don’t think karate is your sport and you want to take a break from it, that is allowed.
